Dr. Andrew A. Jumper
Dr. Andrew A. Jumper was pastor of Central Presbyterian Church from 1970 through 1991. Dr. Jumper was born in Mississippi in 1927 and graduated from the University of Mississippi following three years of service in the Coast Guard. He received his theological education a Austin Seminary, earning two master's degrees, and was recipient of three honorary degrees. In addition to serving as pastor of several churches in Texas between 1954 and 1970 he was active at the highest levels in the denomination. Dr. Jumper was one of the founding fathers of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. His arrival at Central in August, 1970, would begin the second back-to-back twenty-one year pastorates along with J. Layton Mauze, Jr .
Andy introduced most every sermon with these words: "We believe the Bible to be the only infallible rule for faith and practice. The only way to know God's will and God's way is to go to God's Word."
After a brave fight with cancer, Dr. Jumper preached his final sermon on Christmas Eve, 1991. His health continued to fail, and he died on May 28, 1992.
The Jumper sermons from 1970-1982 are currently being scanned and archived as text documents downloadable as PDF files. The Jumper sermons from 1983-1991 are currently archived as audio MP3 files. They can be heard by accessing the sermon media player at the bottom of each year's sermon list. Eventually, all of the Jumper sermons will be available in audio MP3 and text PDF format.
In his latter years, Dr. Jumper often reminded his congregation to remember that "the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing." That main thing being focusing on the Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Dr. Jumper is still fondly remembered by many in the Central Presbyterian Church congregation today.
